Selecting the Right Vision Measuring System

There are seven things to consider when selecting the right vision measuring system for your application:

Part Weight

Since vision measuring systems require a working phase of the glass so that light can pass through, there is a limit on the weight of the part that these systems can handle. While smaller systems can easily handle up to 15kgs, larger systems can take up to 30Kgs. For weights over that limit, the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is the best option.

Part Size

The portion size determines the XYZ measuring range of the system. Check the largest part you want to measure and specify the required measurement range for each axis accordingly.

Feature Size

The dimensions of the features on the part will dictate the optical magnification, screen size, and resolution of the scale. Specify the dimension of the smallest feature you want to measure and the provider will suggest the most suitable configuration for you.

Feature accessibility

Are the features that need to be measured, in the line of sight on the z-axis. If yes, then the CCD camera installed on the Z-axis can access all the features visually. However, if some features are not in the line of sight, an additional tactile probe will be needed to access and measure them.

Feature number

The number of features that need to be measured in a part and the time taken to measure them decide whether a motorized work stage with CNC controls and joystick controls is needed. Automatic control allows the programming of measurement steps so that the system can automatically measure for equal parts.

Feature location

If your part has features that are located on different planes so that you need to constantly focus while moving from one plane to another, an autofocus feature will save a lot of time and effort.

Software Features

Ask for a demo of the system for your samples and check to see if the metrology software can perform all the required functions within the desired time frame. Also, compare the sample test report you got from the demo with the standard report and check the accuracy.
